So I have this e-mail offer from Xbox about making my Silver account Gold for $2 for 2 months -- dated from June 2012.
I was able to take the link and make it available to a secondary Silver account and NOT the account to which it was e-mailed. Didn't actually make the final purchase as of yet.

You do need to add or already have CC info tied to the account and when I was signing in, I had to do the Security Proofs (send me a code) verification.
Edit: As others have pointed out, make sure you set the auto-renewal to OFF. If not you will get billed the regular $9.99 month-to-month rate at the end of the trial in mid February.
