We gave the game 3 out of 5 stars in our review earlier today, praising the game's incredible production values while finding the pace and progress of the game just a little too slow for our liking. If you're just starting out and need some tips for getting on top of the action, our guide will bring you up to speed with the basics.
- If you find yourself really stuck when it comes to leveling up to meet the challenge, you can always go back and replay some of the earlier missions. Note that XP demands go up as your level increases, so you may have to replay some of these simpler missions many times to get a leg up!
- Always choose the right fighting unit for whatever job you have at hand, and make them the priority when it comes to sharing out upgrade resources. If having a long-range fighting force is absolutely critical for the campaign scenario, it makes less sense to prioritize upgrading your melee forces, for example.
- Unless you're going for a very specific progression build, it's best to spread out your skill points evenly between the four different categories. Each category is fairly dependent on the others, and so it pays to invest in all areas of your game. Note that as you progress through the upgrade ranks, the cost of each upgrade goes up a little.
- Be very prompt with the use of your trebuchet, and keep an eye on the enemy forces that are making their way towards your castle off-screen. The missiles it fires can take some time to arrive, and if you don't use the device preemptively, your own army can often be obliterated before the long-range cavalry arrives.
- If you're struggling to keep your troops alive, considering bringing a few characters from the Mage Grendel class into play. As well as being able to withstand a considerable percentage of archer damage, this basic but versatile unit can not only dish out a little damage of its own, it also has the chance to restore 10% of health to nearby ally units.
- In the early stages of the game, it's sufficient to fire off a large number of simple melee units into battle. Once you've got your lumbermill upgraded and ticking over, fire out as many soldiers as the game will let you - this basic, rush attacking force will have no trouble taking out enemy lumbermill defenses early on.
- Don't forget that you can switch the path of your next batch of troops by tapping on the green arrows that sometimes appear on the ground. Keep an eye on the status of all beneficial shrines on the map, and make sure you divert a few soldiers to retake any that fall to the enemy.
- Whether you choose to rush or wait in a multiplayer game is a matter of choice, but if you see your opponent making an early push, don't feel compelled to respond in kind immediately. As long as you can keep your defenses up with a basic army and trebauchet use, you may want to take the long view, grab shrines, shore up defenses, and then prepare for an overwhelming assault against your opponent's inferior infrastructure.
